Boats in Art
Monet’s Impression, Sunrise (1872) made great ripples through the art world when it was debuted and gave the name to one of the most popular movements, Impressionism. Meanwhile, in the south of France, Vincent van Gogh painted lovely boats sitting on the shore of Sainte-Marie-de-la-Mar, France. His series Saintes-Maries consists of a number of paintings where van Gogh painted serene boats on the shore, which van Gogh said, “I made the drawing of the boats when I left very early in the morning, and I am now working on a painting based on it, a size 30 canvas with more sea and sky on the right. It was before the boats hastened out; I had watched them every morning, but as they leave very early I didn't have time to paint them.” Hokusai’s Great Wave off Kanagawa features three small boats being overturned by a great wave. John William Waterhouse’s The Lady of Shalottalso famously features a boat scene. In one of his only seascape paintings, Dutch artist Rembrandt paints The Storm on the Sea of Galilee, which has been stolen from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. Ivan Aivazovsky is the art world’s most famous painter of sea scenes. His paintings feature stunning boats and ships floating in the illuminating ocean water. His maritime paintings capture the unique movements of the light. Aivazovsky isn’t the only Russian artist to paint boats. Within our collection, we showcase the work of Nikolay Dubovsky, whose Rainbowshows a delightful rainbow falling on a lake.

Venice Boats
Venice, a city made up of hundreds of islands, has two means of travel: foot and boat. The Venetian gondola has drawn in a number of tourists looking to take a romantic trip through the canals. While Venice has several different boats, the gondola is the most well-known. Venice paintings often feature gondolas as boat art in the Venetian lagoon.
