Venice

Venice is known for being the ‘City of Canals’, for its many beautiful bridges, gondola rides, vibrant streets, and impeccable wall art. Venice, the north-eastern city in Italy, draws in so many people year-round that the foot traffic has begun to affect the platforms. It’s safe to say Venice is a popular city. The floating city is filled with cuisine unique to the area, sights, and architecture.

Was Venice built on water?

The early settlers of Venice had to dig the canals that the romantic gondolas float through today. Venice is made up of a group of 117 small islands connected by a series of bridges. Cars aren’t found in Venice as they are forbidden, but also the city doesn’t have any roads to support cars. It’s best to stick to transport via foot or gondolas. Scenes of Saint Mark’s Basilica and Doge’s Palace are majestic and inspiring.

Venice Art

The gorgeous sights of Venice have attracted tourists for centuries. The Venetian landscape painter Canaletto depicted Venice in art numerous times. After Canaletto there came Francesco Guardi, who painted Venice in the eighteenth century in all its epic glory. Artists from all over Europe have made their way to the ‘City of Canals’ and have been inspired by the sights and expressed them in paintings. JMW Turner added Venice to the list of cities he so beautifully captured, as did many of the Impressionists, like Claude Monet who painted The Grand Canal (1908), which features the iridescent waters of Venice. Another Impressionist artist who has painted the city is Edouard Manet in Grand Canal (1875), which features a man rowing a gondola.
