Ivan Aivazovsky (Russian: Иван Айвазовский) (July 29, 1817 – May 5, 1900) was an Armenian-Russian painter living and working in Crimea on the Black Sea, and widely considered as one of the greatest seascape painters of all time. His technique and imagination in depicting the shimmering play of light on ocean waves is especially admired. The depth and atmosphere of his paintings is created by his incredible ability to depict light on water – sunlight and moonlight through storm-clouds or fog. A series of paintings of naval battles created in the 1840s demonstrates his skill at painting dramatic and exciting scenes.
